Christmas worked example

Christmas Dinner for Six: Quantities, Packs, Fridge, Oven and Hob

Six people can still exceed one ordinary fridge shelf, one table route or the real simultaneous hob capacity. Start with six transparent side-dish targets, compare only exact same-basis packs, then prove the room, cold storage, oven, pans, vessels and final handovers before buying the full menu.

Calculate six rows before choosing packs

This worked case enters six diners, uses the visible starting rates in the Christmas dinner quantity calculator and adds no named leftover equivalents. Every diner is counted at the full editable rate for all six rows.

Dish rowEditable starting rateSix-person targetBasis that must stay attached
Potatoes250 g1,500 gRaw potatoes
Vegetables160 g960 g combinedCombined raw vegetables—not each vegetable
Stuffing75 g450 gPrepared stuffing
Gravy150 ml900 mlPrepared gravy
Pigs in blankets2 pieces12 piecesWhole pieces
Sauce30 ml180 mlPrepared sauce

Change the eater count per row, the rate or the named extras when the real party requires it. Do not add a seventh “just in case” diner across every dish or treat the outputs as a main-course plan.

Compare two current packs on the exact basis

These two UK retailer pages were captured on 3 September 2026 to demonstrate same-basis pack decisions. Recheck the live listing and physical label before buying because size, ingredients, availability and instructions can change.

TargetCaptured listingArithmeticDecision boundary
1,500 g raw potatoesTesco Maris Piper Potatoes 2.5 kg; raw potato basisceil(1,500 ÷ 2,500) = 1 pack; 1,000 g arithmetic surplusOne pack covers the raw target if the current pack and condition are accepted; the surplus is not guaranteed cooked leftovers
12 pigs in blanketsTesco 12 Pigs in Blankets 240 g; title and instructions identify 12 piecesceil(12 ÷ 12) = 1 pack; zero piece-rounding surplusRecheck exact product, label, storage, ingredients and instructions; another 240 g product may have a different count

A 170 g dry stuffing-mix pack would not be compared directly with the 450 g prepared-stuffing target unless the exact current instructions provide a verified prepared yield on that basis. The same rule applies to gravy granules, concentrate and prepared millilitres.

Pack-rounding surplus is not labelled as guaranteed leftovers. Preparation loss, selection, actual appetite and service history still control what remains.

Prove six complete places and every route

The number six does not prove the table. Use the dining-table seating estimate, then complete the real small-room table proof.

  • Stage six actual chair states, six complete place settings and the agreed access adjustments.
  • Open doors, pull occupied chairs back and include any mobility-aid footprint as agreed with the guest.
  • Place water, gravy or sauce jugs, serving dishes, utensils and the centrepiece at the same revision.
  • Carry one empty or safely cold-weighted vessel through the incoming route.
  • Run the dirty-return path only after the incoming service trigger closes.
  • Keep the household escape route available and the keys findable.

Do not publish a universal table size or chair clearance for six. The real furniture, room, doors, guests and service mode decide whether the arrangement passes.

Build all four fridge snapshots

Use the Christmas fridge-space planner with measured shelf rectangles and the real containers. Six diners still create different peak loads across the event.

SnapshotSix-person contents to stageBlocked until
S1 after shoppingEvery exact chilled pack, controlled item and ordinary household foodCurrent pack dimensions and locations are measured
S2 defrostingAny exact frozen main in its protected container plus retained chilled foodExact label-led defrost plan and container footprint exist
S3 make-ahead peakVerified prepared dishes in final containers alongside the main and unopened itemsComplete recipes, cooling routes and container dimensions are known
S4 leftoversOnly admitted batch containers, labels and ordinary retained foodUsable histories, lids, portions and cold positions pass

Area arithmetic is only a definite-conflict screen. A snapshot can show less than 100% nominal area and still fail because real containers do not tessellate, heights collide or one item needs protected placement. Physically stage all four states.

Keep the one-oven plan unknown until products exist

The six side targets do not supply temperatures, durations, tray footprints, sharing permission or final checks. Copy those only from the exact accepted products, complete recipes and appliance instructions.

Oven rowRequired evidenceCurrent worked state
Main blockExact cut, weight or product, instructions, tray and completion checkUNKNOWN—no main chosen
Potato blockExact recipe, finished batch, tray footprint and oven requirementsUNKNOWN—raw target only
Stuffing blockExact prepared yield, cooking container and current methodUNKNOWN—prepared target only
Pigs-in-blankets blockRechecked current physical pack and its instructionsPROVISIONAL LISTING ONLY—label check pending
Final windowActual completion evidence, serving vessels, table and plate releasesUNKNOWN until retained rows have complete paths

Unknown is the correct status here. Once the exact menu exists, resolve resource conflicts in the one-oven method and enter only supported durations into the calculator.

Prove the hob state with real pans

Six portions can require wide pans even when only three or four jobs appear on the schedule. Use the hob and pan capacity plan after the exact recipes and batch sizes exist.

  • Register each pan’s base, widest body, handle sweep, lid and utensil movement.
  • Place every pan in each proposed simultaneous state with the appliance off.
  • Keep controls visible and reachable without leaning across another pan.
  • Stage the loaded transfer from ring to named landing and service vessel.
  • Block the state when a handle, lid, control, person or transfer route collides.
  • Write a lost-ring reduction before cooking; do not change settings or methods by guess.

The six-person targets do not prove which pans are needed or whether nominal ring count is enough. Exact recipes, equipment and actions control that answer.

Match finished food to vessels and plates

Raw and prepared targets do not prove finished yields or bowl capacity. Transfer each exact completed batch through the serving-dish register.

Target rowService evidence still required
1,500 g raw potatoesActual finished yield, supported bowl fill, utensil, table footprint and refill
960 g combined vegetablesSeparate named vegetable yields and vessels; do not multiply 960 g by every vegetable
450 g prepared stuffingExact recipe or pack yield and same-basis finished vessel test
900 ml prepared gravyExact variants, pan methods, tested jug working fills and non-merging refill histories
12 pigs in blanketsActual completed pieces, suitable tray or platter and controlled utensil
180 ml prepared sauceExact product identity, service container, utensil and guest controls

Carry any controlled components into the dietary-plate release. A six-place table does not permit an anonymous bowl, spoon or plate swap.

Run the complete six-person cold rehearsal

  1. Print the six-row target and pack ledger, then recheck both dated retailer pages and the physical packs chosen for the real shop.
  2. Stage six complete places, every intended empty serving vessel and the incoming and dirty-return routes.
  3. Physically load all four fridge snapshots using the exact packs and final containers.
  4. Build the instruction-led one-oven ledger and keep every unavailable method or duration UNKNOWN.
  5. With the hob off, stage every pan, handle, lid, control and transfer state under the exact planned methods.
  6. Fail the main check, remove one ring, block the gravy landing and swap one controlled utensil.
  7. The team must propagate unknown times, drop optional work, preserve controlled identities and issue one evidence-led guest update.

The rehearsal tests arithmetic, objects, storage packing, routes, capacity and handovers. It does not prove appetite, current availability, price, ingredients, cooking, cooling, temperature, allergen control or food safety. Recheck current labels, official guidance and the real food evidence.

Questions people ask

How many potatoes do I need for six people at Christmas?

The editable starting assumption gives 1,500 g raw potatoes for six full-rate diners. Change the rate, eater count and named extras for the real party, then compare with current raw-potato pack weights on the same basis.

How much gravy do I need for six people?

The editable starting assumption gives 900 ml prepared gravy. Split that intention across exact dietary variants where needed, then verify each current packet or recipe yield, pan method and jug working fill.

How many pigs in blankets do I need for six?

The editable starting rate of two pieces each produces 12 pieces. A captured Tesco 12-piece listing matches that piece target arithmetically, but recheck the live page, physical label, ingredients, storage and instructions before buying.

Will six people fit around my dining table?

Headcount alone cannot answer. Use the seating estimate, then stage six real chairs, place settings, serving dishes, door swings and every guest and service route in the actual room.

Can I use these figures as cooking instructions?

No. They are editable quantity targets. Exact current products, complete recipes, appliance instructions and official guidance control storage, preparation, cooking, completion and service.
