The Unflustered Host

Editorial method

A useful plan needs visible assumptions, reputable sources and a clear line between an estimate and a rule.

Our process

  1. Define the decision. Every page starts with something a host needs to decide or do.
  2. Find the strongest sources. We prefer UK government, recognised safety bodies, standards and direct industry data.
  3. Show the assumptions. Calculator defaults and adjustment factors are published beside the result.
  4. Check separately. Automated tests cover formulas, routes and source structure. Human checks of representative outputs, live sources and phone and desktop usability are required before public launch.
  5. Update visibly. Material changes update the date; cosmetic edits do not.

Use of AI

AI assists with research organisation, drafting, coding and quality checks. It is not treated as a source. Published factual claims must trace to an external source or be clearly labelled as our own planning assumption. Pages should add a working tool, original analysis, a tested example or another form of value beyond summarising search results.

Corrections

If a calculation or factual statement is wrong, we correct it promptly and note material corrections on the affected page. Readers can use the contact page to report a problem.

Food and alcohol

Food quantity outputs are planning estimates, not safety instructions. Always follow storage, cooking, allergen and use-by information from the Food Standards Agency and product labels. Drinks calculators describe stock planning—not a recommended level of alcohol consumption—and always include alcohol-free drinks and water.
