Christmas worked example

Christmas Dinner for Eight: Quantities, Table, Fridge, Oven and Hob

Eight diners often create the first real extension problem: one table may need a leaf, a second table may change serving and access routes, and familiar pans can stop fitting together. Use transparent side targets, compare exact packs, then prove both room candidates and every cold and hot resource.

Calculate all six eight-person targets

This worked case enters eight diners in the Christmas dinner quantity calculator, keeps all six visible starting rates and adds no named leftover equivalents.

DishEditable rateEight-person targetBasis
Potatoes250 g2,000 gRaw potatoes
Vegetables160 g1,280 g combinedCombined raw vegetables
Stuffing75 g600 gPrepared stuffing
Gravy150 ml1,200 mlPrepared gravy
Pigs in blankets2 pieces16 piecesWhole pieces
Sauce30 ml240 mlPrepared sauce

These are disclosed planning assumptions, not a claim that every guest wants every item. Change eaters per row, rate and named extras for the actual party. The 1,280 g vegetable output is one combined total, not 1,280 g for each vegetable.

Round two dated products on the same basis

These retailer listings were captured on 3 September 2026. Recheck the current page and physical label because product size, count, ingredients, availability and instructions can change.

TargetCaptured productWhole-pack arithmeticResult boundary
2,000 g raw potatoesTesco Maris Piper Potatoes 2.5 kgceil(2,000 ÷ 2,500) = 1 pack500 g raw arithmetic surplus; not guaranteed cooked leftovers
16 pigs in blanketsTesco 12 Pigs in Blankets 240 gceil(16 ÷ 12) = 2 packs24 bought pieces; 8-piece arithmetic surplus before real cooking and service

The pigs-in-blankets comparison uses the stated piece count, not a 240 g mass conversion. A different 240 g product may contain a different number of pieces. Dry stuffing weight and gravy-granule weight still cannot be compared directly with prepared-gram or prepared-millilitre targets without exact supported yields.

Do not hide the eight extra pieces. Allocate them to named dinner portions, a named leftover purpose or a smaller accepted purchase. Pack surplus is not permission to over-serve or a guarantee that food will be usable later.

Compare an extension leaf with two tables

Create two complete revisions in the small-room table proof. Candidate A uses the real main table with its exact extension leaf installed under the maker instructions. Candidate B uses two real tables only if their stability, heights, place settings and routes pass.

Proof rowCandidate A: extension leafCandidate B: two tables
Eight placesAll chairs and complete settings staged around the extended tablePrivate seat IDs assigned across both tables without isolating a guest by assumption
Furniture evidenceLeaf, locks, supports and maker capacity checkedEach table stable; no improvised bridge or unsupported shared surface
Guest accessEvery occupied chair, door and agreed aid footprint testedRoute between tables remains usable when all chairs are occupied
ServiceAll vessel footprints and reach decisions placedDuplicate or owner-led service route proved for both tables
Dirty returnIncoming route closes before returns beginBoth table routes merge only at a named, non-conflicting handover
Overall stateBLOCKED until real full-state rehearsalBLOCKED until real full-state rehearsal

Do not pick the candidate from arithmetic alone. Use the same eight guest needs, vessels, doors and service revision in both tests, then choose the arrangement that physically passes with the fewest unsupported movements.

Stage four eight-person fridge peaks

Measure the exact packs and containers in the four-snapshot fridge planner. Eight portions can enlarge prepared containers and leftovers even when the shopping bags initially fit.

  1. S1 after shopping: exact chilled packs, protected controlled food and ordinary household contents.
  2. S2 defrosting: exact main and containment under its label-led plan, with everything that must remain chilled.
  3. S3 make-ahead peak: verified prepared dishes in final containers plus retained unopened food.
  4. S4 leftovers: only admitted batch containers with complete labels, alongside normal retained food.

List each object once per snapshot and preserve protected placement. Area below 100% can still fail when real widths, depths, heights, door bins, circulation or separation requirements collide. Physically stage all four states.

Leave the one-oven sequence evidence-led

The eight-person targets do not provide an oven schedule. Build one only after the exact products, complete recipes, tray footprints, appliance instructions and final checks exist.

RowTarget or intentionSchedule state
MainNo main selected by this side-dish exampleUNKNOWN—exact cut, size, tray and instructions missing
Potatoes2,000 g rawUNKNOWN—finished method, tray and oven block missing

Pigs in blankets16 planned pieces from two captured 12-piece packsPROVISIONAL—physical labels and exact retained quantity decide tray and instructions
Final serviceEight places under one selected room revisionUNKNOWN until food, vessels, routes and plates have complete paths

Resolve conflicts through the one-oven method. Do not raise settings, shorten checks or assume two trays can share merely because the eight-person target is known.

Prove the hob and a lost-ring fallback

Carry every exact pan job into the hob capacity plan. Eight-person batches may change pan footprints, handle sweeps and loaded transfers compared with the six-person case.

  • Measure every exact pan base, widest footprint, handle sweep, lid and utensil action.
  • Stage each proposed simultaneous state with the appliance off.
  • Keep controls visible and every loaded landing and transfer route available.
  • Assign one owner to each required observation and action.
  • Remove one ring in rehearsal and mark every dependent state BLOCKED.
  • Use only a preverified compatible alternative or remove/resequence an optional supported row.

Do not reduce the eight-person quantity silently to fit a pan or increase a heat setting to recover time. Change the accepted menu, batch or sequence through exact supported evidence.

Split service without splitting the evidence

One long table and two tables create different service patterns. Match every finished yield to a tested vessel and use owner-led refills where duplicate full vessels would crowd the room.

  • Keep shopping target, finished yield and service load separate.
  • Give each public and reserve vessel a batch ID, utensil, table position and refill owner.
  • Do not top new food onto an older remainder and erase service histories.
  • Do not make controlled guests pass a shared vessel or utensil when that breaks the agreed plan.
  • Carry private plate IDs through a direct handover where the table arrangement needs it.
  • Close both candidate table routes into the same clean-service and dirty-return plan.

The 1,200 ml gravy intention may use smaller tested jug loads, but each exact variant, pan method, working fill and refill history remains separate.

Run the two-candidate cold rehearsal

  1. Recheck the two dated retailer listings and physical packs; record exact ingredients, storage and current instructions.
  2. Stage Candidate A with the real extension leaf, eight chairs, eight settings and every empty service vessel.
  3. Stage Candidate B with both real tables and the identical guest, vessel and route evidence.
  4. Physically pack all four fridge snapshots and run the instruction-led oven ledger with unknowns preserved.
  5. With the hob off, stage the eight-person pans, lids, controls and transfers, then remove one ring.
  6. Block one route between Candidate B’s tables, detach one controlled plate marker and remove one helper.
  7. Select a seating candidate only if every required guest, food, service, dirty-return and escape route passes at one revision.

The rehearsal tests arithmetic, furniture, storage packing, objects, routes, capacity and handovers. It does not prove product availability, price, appetite, cooking, temperature, allergen control or food safety.

Questions people ask

How many roast potatoes do I need for eight people?

The editable starting assumption gives 2,000 g raw potatoes. Change the eater count, rate and named extras for the actual party, then compare with current raw-potato packs on the same basis.

How much gravy do I need for eight people?

The editable starting assumption gives 1,200 ml prepared gravy. Verify exact recipe or product yields, dietary variants, pan methods and tested jug working fills before service.

How many pigs in blankets do I need for eight?

The editable starting rate gives 16 pieces. Two captured 12-piece packs would buy 24 pieces, leaving an eight-piece arithmetic surplus; recheck the live product and allocate that surplus deliberately.

Is one long table or two tables better for eight?

Neither is automatically better. Stage both real candidates with all eight occupied chairs, complete settings, vessels, access needs, incoming service, dirty returns and escape route, then select only a fully passing revision.

Can these quantity figures become cooking times?

No. They are editable shopping targets. Current exact products, complete recipes and appliance instructions control preparation, cooking, completion and service.
